There's a thing called Transcript Alienware Demo that I activated to get it working, not sure if it still works, though.

have you confirmed your email first? if not, then you should go onto the email you entered while making your account. Then you should be able to access the steam community and send/receive friend requests. But until you are able to confirm the email, you won't be able to have friends on steam.
